The Flip! guide to saving money is here. Read this guide and start saving money on all your stuff. You can send in your money saving tips at the bottom of the page.

General Money Saving Tips

Arrive at lectures with hot dogs, begin selling them as they do in American baseball games, shouting “Get yer red hots!” etc. When asked to stop…campaign bitterly! -  (The next Alan Sugar is talking here!!)

A good way of saving money is, when you get your loan cheque, is to bank it, then put half of it into a high-interest account, and leave the other half in your current account. This prevents you from splurging it all on CDs and pizzas, and earns you money from the interest.

Because it is in a high interest account it will probably be harder to get at it instantly – ie you have a book rather than a card, so you don’t end up getting loads of money out when you’re drunk.

Phone money saving tips

Instead of ringing people on your home phone or mobile ring them and let it ring once then hang-up. They will notice you tried to ring and phone you back. This will not cost you a penny and could save you a fortune.

Wait till after 6pm when using your home phone or after 7pm for your mobile. This will also save you money on telephone calls. Instead of txting people on your mobile do it on the internet for free from the computers at college or university. Blag your parents to buy you a phone card or 2 and get them to ring you. Don’t go on the internet at home. Go on it at your university because it’s free!

Eating money saving tips

Keep an eye on the specials board for cheap grub when your eating out. Don’t want to pay for all your meals? Get a job in a restaurant who offer meals whilst on duty – bargain!!

Shop at the end of the day because this is when the store discount their products because there sell by date is running out. Don’t eat out, eat in! This could save you about £15 pounds per week. Take your own dinner and snacks to university because its a lot cheaper then the canteen.

Shopping money tips

Coupons are great for students so use them. Learn to shop around for discounts and compare the prices to find the cheapest.

When at the supermarket buying pizza’s and ready made meals, buy them from the FROZEN cabinet coz it’s a bit cheaper than the pizza’s in the chilled cabinet.

Buy clothes from second hand shops and charity shops. You can find some great stuff if you dig around a little.

Try to buy fresh fruit & veg from a market, but if u need to go 2 the supermarket, DON’T buy pre-packed lettuce or bags of fruit coz it works out more expensive.

Buy lots of tinned food when you’re shopping because its tasty, cheap and keeps in date for practically forever. Take your NUS card everywhere and always ask if they give a student discount.

First visit the damages/discounts section of the store for some really cheap tasty treats. Buy the economy brands from the supermarket. OK, it tastes like last months dirty socks but its cheap. Could save you about £10 a week on shopping bills.

Text book saving tips

Instead of buying new books ask people for their old ones. You could advertise that you are looking for a certain book on the university notice board or look on the internet for used books that are cheap.

Going out money tips

Make sure you go out with a mate who has a credit card, after a few eye openers you should suggest they use their credit card to pay, of course they will…when their bill comes a month later, blame it on the beer monkeys… another money saving tip from a student who’d rather walk home 5 miles than pay for a taxi!

Go to all the student nights because they have cheaper drinks and other promotional offers on. Drink in your SU bar because its always cheaper. Buy pints not bottle because you get more in a pint and most of the time its stronger. If you smoke just ask the people your with for a spare fag or take out your rolling backy. You may look like a trog but its saves you a lot of money. Better still, quit!

Before you go out on the town or to a club pay a quick visit to the off-license and buy the poison of your choice. Drink it and then go out. This will save you loads of money because you won’t have to buy drinks at the pub at double the price.

Get your mates to buy you a drink!!

Around the home

Hand-wash your clothes because its way cheaper. Wash your stuff at a mates house.

If you live in halls or a shared flat/house, resist taking the most essential thing of all – your TV. There is more than likely to be someone in the halls or the flat that has already brought a TV that you can watch and THEY are having to pay the hefty TV license, not you. – Sent in by Kirsty Hyett (Wow, she is really helpful, cheers)

Turn your heating down a few degrees. This will save you money and you won’t even notice the difference.

On the move

Get a student rail card and bus pass. This will save you about 33% on traveling money. Instead of raging your car around a full speed slow down and you’ll save money on fuel. Walk, only costs a few calories and it gets you fit. Start jogging!! Pretend that students aren’t lazy.
