We love Calvin Harris, we always have. There’s something strangely charming about the Scottish dance giant. We also like the fact he knows how to a make people laugh with his witty twitter feed or his excellent Jam TV on YouTube. Mr Harris is also a bit of a style icon know with his very own Fly Eye glasses and brightly colored wardbrobe but a bit less about that, lets get on to the reason we really love him. His music.
Calvin Harris burst on to the music scene in 2007 with his excellent “Acceptable In The 80′s”, a whopping floorfiller with three layers of catchy synth riffs, and a bassline so mighty it blew the dust of the speakers. Following on from the success of this Calvin brought us his debut album “I Created Disco”. Okay so maybe he didn’t really create disco but least he has a sense of humor about it.
Anyway back on to the matter in hand. “Ready For The Weekend” is the second album from Mr Harris. His biggest hit of the new album is most definitely “I’m Not Alone”, a track described by the man himself as a “stadium dance tune”. Some may think this is a bold statement, but with other tracks such as “Stars Come Out” and “Ready For The Weekend” to go with it, he sure as hell isn’t wrong there. You only have to look at the crowds reaction at this years summer festivals to see this.
Another unexpected highlight on the album includes the opening song”Rain” Its not very often that a dance album opens with a Saxophone riff, yet Calvin manages to pull it off beautifully. Following on from “Rain” comes the track that sums this album up, “Ready For The Weekend”. Okay so maybe its not the greatest album in the weekend, but if your heading for a night out on the tiles it should most certainly be your soundtrack.
Following on from “Ready For The Weekend” comes the almost certain to be massive “We Can Watch The Stars Come Out” and “You Used To Hold Me” which has a somewhat dark feel, Calvin’s booming voice echoing adds a new dimension to the Calvin Harris sound, One that we like alot.
Following on from this though is another change in the Harris sound with single “Blue”. The first Calvin Harris song we know of to actually feature a guitar. After “Blue” though we get back to the big hitters and this one is the biggest of the lot. Its the anthem of the summer and sounds massive what ever you play it through. “Im Not Alone” has a euphoric quality to it that makes it the highlight of the album. “Flashback” follows on rivaling the previous as being a hitter with its strong piano beat’s and strong female vocals.
“Worst Day” takes us in to Calvin’s relationship past listing the mistake’s of a relationship he really didn’t want to be apart of in the first place. Now we are getting to the part of the album where its time to “Relax” or so you would think. “Relax” has a heavy Latin vibe but also a cold computer beat. Following on from this is “Limits” with its depressing lyrics and vocoder sound.
If you thought that “Relax” & “Limits” where a little boring, wait til you hear “Burns Night”. A lyricless track that has more chance of sending you to sleep than getting you raving in your living room. Things get a bit funkier though with “Yeah Yeah Yeah La La La”. A song which some of you may know is currently the backing track to the Coke adverts.
“Dance Wiv Me” soons follows and reminds us just what this album is missing. More massive tunes. Lets not forget that “Dance Wive Me” was and still remains a massive club banger, yet its burried towards the back as if it is a filler track. Sorry Calvin mate but it should be near the top with the other massive tunes. “5iliconeator” presents a different side to Harris than just the massive tunes and is sort of “The come down tune of the night”, being both lyricless and poignant.
Overall “Ready For The Weekend” is not a bad album, it has a big nostalgia quality to it. Calvo’s songwriting still needs tweak, but at the end of the day the only thing that matters is the music and not the words.
